Apprenticeships are an important bridge between education and working life. For many, it is the first step into the industry, while for others it is the start of a whole new career. What they all have in common is the opportunity to learn a trade, develop alongside experienced colleagues and build a long-term future in the installation industry.
Meet Petter – the adult apprentice who chose to start over
After twelve years in health care Petter decided to change career paths. Today, he is an apprentice at Installationsbolaget GBG and is training to become a plumber.
– I wanted to have a knowledge, a skill and learn a profession. The best thing about practical work is that you can say: “I did that”, and feel proud, says Petter.
At the age of 33, he chose to return to school and train through adult education. For him, the opportunity to work with his hands, to develop every day and to have a secure future was crucial.
– Pipefitters will always be needed. In fact, that was one of the reasons I came here. It’s an industry that more people should be aware of.
For others considering a career change, he has a simple piece of advice:
– Go for it. It is never too late.
Meet Victor – the apprentice who hit the ground running
When Victor had to choose an upper secondary education, he knew early on which path he wanted to take. His family was already interested in the electrical profession, and he chose the electrical program in Kungsbacka. After graduating, it wasn’t long before he started his apprenticeship at Elektro Emanuel.
– “I actually felt right away when I came out on placement that this is something I want to work with,” says Victor.
Since then, he has completed his apprenticeship and taken the step to become a qualified electrician. What attracted him from the start was the opportunity to work practically, to be on the move and to have variety in his working day.
– During my apprenticeship I got to do a lot of different things. That’s a big part of what makes the job fun.
The community has been at least as important. At Elektro Emanuel, Victor describes a workplace where there is always support available and where it is open to ask questions.
– Everyone is kind and welcoming. If you have a question, you’re not afraid to ask, and there are really no stupid questions.
One of the biggest differences between being an apprentice and a skilled electrician is the increased responsibility and confidence.
– You become more independent and get a little more responsibility. I think that’s very nice.
Behind every apprenticeship there are supervisors, colleagues and companies that contribute every day to developing the installers of the future.
